This year we have continued to monitor the breeding of several pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the coast in Broome from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek on the south side. We have never had a pair succeed in raising all of their chicks and even to succeed in raising one takes a lot of effort because they are so dependent on their parents.

On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. Each day, the small bird then has to fly down and find a resting place, an area to feed and take shelter. Migrant birds make an incredibly perilous journey, twice per year. Flap, flap, glide.

With birds bedecked in their breeding best and filling the air with song, this is migration at its loveliest. Threatened by loss of habitat both on breeding as well as wintering grounds, a few species have even become endangered or at least on a perilous track towards that worrisome designation. I should have known that birding High Island meant I would be 20 minutes away from a place where hundreds of thousands of shorebirds and waterbirds rest, feed, breed, and generally have a good time. I love American Avocets and I rarely see them in such marvelous breeding plumage, so I was in heaven. Clapper Rail. Back to the Flats.

Here's a great question I received via direct message on Twitter ( www.twitter.com/mary_martin ): "Do you think that even if Obama had adopted a shelter dog-it still may have caused a run on breeders? This is why I didn't campaign for a greyhound--it raises their profile. Would it matter?" That's what I'd like to think. Maybe both.

It is at the same time of year that the migratory shorebirds that spend part of each year in Broome are also breeding, but in the Arctic. They sheltered the chicks under their wings and when there are only two chicks one parent can do this, but with three it seems to be more of a shared duty.
