In Costa Rica, June is breeding bird count season. Protected area or not, there has been change in the air, and we need to see how the birds are responding. Most, like the Black-thighed Grosbeak, are also endemic to Costa Rica and Panama. We have counts in gardens, counts in parks, and count routes in many parts of the country.

In Costa Rica, the sole tropical breeding albatross is a rare visitor to pelagic waters of the Pacific. A more surefire way to witness this long-winged bird is by visiting breeding grounds on the Galapago Islands. Two are pelagic species, two are resident, and the other one is a mystery. Waved Albatross (Phoebastria irrorata).

This is where a birder can see flock after flock of Eastern Kingbirds flying south, some occasionally alighting in trees to gobble up small fruits (they apparently go “waxwing” when moving south of their breeding grounds). Swarms of swallows zip past and a crazy train of Chimney Swifts can stretch from horizon to horizon.

I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites). Yes, it was an exceptionally good year. Travel is good for the birding soul.

The seasonal life of one bird species is complex; life cycle events like aging, breeding, molt, and migration are intricately tied to habitat, food availability, genetic ‘instincts,’ hours of daylight, and weather. The effect can be overwhelming, and I found myself reading some sections two, even three times, to understand it all.

Various bird species continue to be affected by those destructive days of deforestation and the subsequent edge effects but thankfully, protected areas were established before any of the regional or country endemic bird species were gone forever. Hopefully, we can help them in time. … Extinction is forever.
