Growing up in Namibia, South Africa, and Sri Lanka provided the perfect setting for this interest. Stepping off the ferry upon arrival on the island, I was welcomed by nearly 20 Northern Wheatears that crowded the pavement right in front of the boat. This time was invariably spent birding on the island (surprisingly…).

And so, back to political entities, this field guide covers Namibia , Botswana , Zimbabwe , the southern half of Mozambique (south of the Zambezi River), South Africa , Lesotho and Eswatini ( Swaziland ). This region is so far from the northern breeding grounds that there are no migratory corridors to show.

Hopefully, the winter time in Shanghai gives the Black-faced Buntings some time to relax from the challenges of the breeding season. One Japanese study found that it arrives at its breeding grounds earlier than in the past, most likely due to increased spring temperatures. No wonder no species are named after me.

In Africa, our bee-eaters occur from the southern tip of the continent right through to the far north, occupying an incredible range of habitats and niches, from the interior of the deepest rainforests of the Congo to the arid steppes of the Sahel.

Africa’s pelicans can be a bit confusing on the identification front as Great White does show an overall pink blush in its plumage during breeding season whereas the pinkest part of Pink-backed Pelican is its lower back, which is only seen in flight! Birdlife South Africa has previously done two of these types of trips before, previously called Flock to Sea – Namibia in 2013 and Flock to Nowhere in 2017, in partnership with MSC Cruises. I learned of the trip right as it had been delayed and made a vow that I would be on that ship. Which makes it a haven for seabirds….and

This map shows the distribution of the World’s bird species, based on overlying the breeding and wintering ranges of all known species. Which leaves me with quite a few choices – practically the entire tropical belt, right? Namibia (595 / 690). It makes me think what is the meaning of life, the universe and everything?
