The Red-fan Parrot breaks the mold by having elongated red feathers with purple tips that it can erect to form a spectacular mane around the head. Although nearly all are colorful, parrots are actually quite conservative when it comes to extravagant plumes.

We managed to see both species of monkey, though – so we were ultimately well satiated. Makes sense in retrospect, as I have also seen this species on the rocky northeastern tip of the island within the littoral forest there. Occasional fly-bys of pairs and trios of Red-bellied Macaws kept us on our toes.

Birders who have been to California might be familiar with the latter two, indeed we would be close to the Poor Knights Islands later in the day, the site of the only breeding colony of Buller’s Shearwaters in the whole world. Hat-tip to Stella. One birder from Australia even got his lifer Red-crowned Parakeet ! Wicked, right?

When they surface, the tips of the snout, biosonar “melon” and dorsal fins appear simultaneously, the tail rarely showing before diving. We found Black-collared Swallows breeding in cracks among the lower riverside rocks. and near-endemic Golden-backed Uakari monkeys ( Cacajao melanocephalus ). Photo by Paul Maury.

Before we get to the birds, allow me to share some tips: Don’t be afraid of Hong Kong. Hundreds massing at Mai Po, many coming into breeding plumage. OK, this isn’t much of a list, but all wild monkey sightings deserve recognition! ). Monkey at a monastery. 9 Little Grebe. 10 Great Crested Grebe.

Very little information was available at the time, so we hired a car and off we went, following the few tips we had managed to gather but mostly our noses. Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season.
