First recorded breeding on the island in 2013, this dove is now both widespread and common. Once considered a distinct race of the more widespread Pied Wheatear, it is now regarded as a full species in its own right. It was strange to hear it here in Cyprus. It’s now on the official quarry list on the island.

The true “Mediterranean” Gull

Sadly, the late recognition that the Mediterranean birds are a species in their own right and not part of the northern Herring Gull meant that the most fitting English common name “Mediterranean Gull” was already occupied by another species, Ichthyaetus melanocephalus.
