Feral Cats in American Cities

The other day, Minneapolis, Minnesota passed a feral cat ordinance. So I put together a “carnival” (of sorts) of Feral Cat Ordinances and Issues that samples current events across the US. From the Star Tribune : Feral cats win a round at Minneapolis City Hall. This got me wondering what other cities were doing.

Pied Oystercatcher chicks two weeks on….

10,000 Birds

It is quite common for several clutches of Pied Oystercatcher eggs to be laid during the breeding season and often within ten days of egg or chick loss. The wind was just too much and they sheltered together in the vegetation at the high tide mark. Pied Oystercatcher chick sheltering from the wind.

The first Pied Oystercatcher chicks of 2018

Pied Oystercatcher chick sheltering under an adult bird. Feral cats have been an issue in previous years and continue to be a problem along the length of Cable Beach that we monitor. Red-capped Plovers are also breeding along Cable Beach at the moment and we have observed several chicks and there are also newly laid eggs.

A feral kitten captured and neutered by a small non-profit, somewhat militant organization, was on display at our local Massachusetts Society Prevention of Cruelty Association branch, which often took these feral cats in the hope of finding homes for them. The work of shelters and breed rescue organizations is vital.

Lake Bindegolly National Park

The National Park is unusual because it offers very few facilities compared to most, but there is a sealed road right into the small car park and a shade shelter with a table and chairs and information about the park. Apparently they breed to the south and return to feed at Lake Bindegolly. Feral pigs. miles long. Turtle shell.

The causes were the usual reasons for island extinction—deforestation by both humans and invasive plants that crowded out native plants, hunting, and invasive rats, mongoose, monkeys, and, of course, feral cats. Women gathered their long skirts and hurried for the shelter of stores. Children screamed and ran for home. Horses bolted.
