The island is similar to Kapiti , cleared of introduced pests and used to hold endangered species. The Shore Plovers did well on the island, breeding a year after arriving (unexpected quickly as it turned out). The also show up on the mainland, particularly in Porirua Harbour which is across the water from Mana Island.

( Google Scholar is an excellent resource and free full-text PDFs can be located for many papers, particularly when research is taxpayer-funded. It is helpful to have a sample paper.

My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience. I read that the Peak was a great place for thrushes in winter; experience proved the veracity of that observation, but you’ll need to examine the underbrush closely.
