It seems likely that this individual bird was an escape from a local zoo, as has already been theorized on the New York State listserv. And eastern Long Island has seen its share of visitors from the east this year, with everything from Tufted Ducks to Northern Lapwings to a host of Eurasian Wigeons showing up.

It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths. When these birds breed, this can lead to highly cringeworthy announcements, for example from Adelaide Zoo : “We have egg-citing news!” Breeding pairs form exclusive social bonds, yet each partner will still mate with other individuals.”

Lesser Whistling Duck were flying around, and a Black-naped Oriole provided a nice flash of colour. Both are common, really common, and both are essentially indistinguishable in non-breeding plumage. Next we drove to the local bird breeding centre.

Strangely, the photo accompanying the Wikipedia entry on Collared Finchbills , Asian birds, was taken at Cincinnati zoo. I wonder what Americans would think if, in a Wikipedia entry, a Bald Eagle would be illustrated using a photo taken at an Albanian zoo. There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June.
