Birding Napo, Guangxi, China – part 1

10,000 Birds

That comes at a price – the HBW describes the species as “stocky and fairly sluggish” and – with a critical undertone – continues to state that the species is “generally less agile in flight than are most flycatchers”. Why the Latin species name is cyaniventer (meaning having a dark blue belly) remains a mystery to me though.

The Siberian Rubythroat

10,000 Birds

The Siberian Rubythroat seems to somewhat lack a proper inbuilt GPS system – while it breeds as far west as the Ural Mountains and winters as far est as Central India, it does not migrate through central Asia in large numbers (even though this would be the shortest way). So better not let a rubythroat bite you. .

The Metamorphosis

10,000 Birds

The Purple Swamphen now is considered a superspecies, with each of its six races are designated full species – and in the strange world of birding, a superspecies is rather less than a species, not more. This is despite the most likely African origin of the species. Swamphen yes, but Grey-headed? Again: Grey-headed?

Yibin is a typical smallish Chinese city (which in China means slightly above 850,000 people in the metro area, which would make it the fifth-biggest city in Germany but does not get it into the top 100 in China). The Latin species name alphonsiana refers to Prof. What a pity.) What a weird world. Better watch them in the wild.

Lady Amherst’s Pheasant

10,000 Birds

Sarah Amherst, Countess Amherst (1762–1838) was a British naturalist and botanist who lived in India. William also had connections to both China and Napoleon, but I am too lazy to copy these bits from Wikipedia right now. She was responsible for sending the first of these birds to Britain in 1828. Read it there if you want.

A covey of Greys

10,000 Birds

You’d be lucky today to find even a pair in Hungary, while according to the European Breeding Atlas 2 , it “has almost completely disappeared from S, central and W Italy, Switzerland, Norway and W Austria”. The two species are only distantly related, for Grey Francolins are true francolins, hence the name Francolinus pondicerianus.
