In the end, I opted for the Tamis River floodplain, north of Belgrade, and its fish farms, some non-operational, some selling daily angling licenses. Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm. Watching carefully, yes, not one, but two.

In Search of New York’s Breeding Birds

As always, the woods around the marsh were busy with breeders setting up shop. I said good-bye to Wurtsboro and headed east and then north, making my way to the Town of Wallkill in Ulster County, in particular, to Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge where I hoped to see Grasshopper Sparrows and other grassland breeders.

Quebec to Review Puppy Mill Laws

Animal welfare workers are calling for stricter laws on breeding facilities after more than 500 allegedly malnourished dogs were seized from a Quebec puppy farm last week. It's unbelievable that the maximum penalty would be $1,200 if convicted. Exerpted from CTV News. The raid might represent the largest puppy seizure in Canada.

Even more pass through Costa Rica during spring and fall migration, and in summer, you can cross paths with an errant Whimbrel and other shorebirds that opt to extend the vacation in Costa Rica rather than heading way north to the boggy breeding grounds. They were filled with blooming cotton and not much else.
