For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). In Singapore, Common Redshanks mostly drink Tiger Beer. “Odd, me?”

Josh Vandermeulen is sitting pretty at 317 species for the year in Ontario, only 21 off the province’s record of 338, set by Glen Coady in 1996. Anthony also has a brand new blog ! Blake and Holly Wright are hoping to photograph 400 species in the lower 48 this year and have managed to make it to 351 thus far.

It was here that I discovered my first White Ibis, my first Eastern Towhee, my first Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher , and while these species may be “common” to me now they filled me with wonder then. A Green Heron stood stock-still as we passed, blending in with the raised oyster beds recently exposed by the retreating tidal waters.

There aren’t many solutions proferred—the article is really about consciousness-raising—but it’s well worth a read. Fearing that a natural disaster, introduced species, or disease could wipe this fragile population out, the U.S. Thanks to a little human intervention, the future looks much brighter for Millerbirds.

Of course, the fun of a bird race increases exponentially by the quality and quantity of the species that might be seen. The species list for this rich expanse of avifauna represents nearly 75% of the Lone Star state’s 600 birds, with some teams spotting over 300 in a very intense 5 days!

A mozzie bites me, so I take the “Expedition Plus Insect Repellent” from my rucksack (when I think about it now, any local brand would probably be equally efficient, but they lack the word “expedition” which immediately turns you into a proper explorer) and start spraying my hands and neck. The closer one raises her head, than lies back.
