Steve, another member of our birding group, also had a field guide by Kenefick, Restall, and Hayes, but his was bordered in GREEN, had a slightly different title, and, to my extreme chagrin, was much more recent, showing the recently split Trinidad Motmot instead of the Blue-crowned Motmot on my book’s cover. I was confused.

Honeyeaters are a large bird family (190 species) with a strong presence in Australia. The book hastens to assure us that “we may safely assume that it referred only to bright plumage” While larger, the White-eared Honeyeater seems to follow a somewhat similar color scheme. ” (HBW).

It provides goals and a definite direction for your birding travels and thoughts; sometimes it even becomes the basis of a book!

She has a new book out (which I am reading right now) called One Good Dog. A feral kitten captured and neutered by a small non-profit, somewhat militant organization, was on display at our local Massachusetts Society Prevention of Cruelty Association branch, which often took these feral cats in the hope of finding homes for them.

Mum, Dad, I’m sorry I described my childhood as feral. It all comes back to a split in one of the great bird families, the Turdidae, or thrushes. Once upon a time, when I started birding, this great family included a wide range of species collectively known as the robins and chats. The family reunited in safety.
