In June 2021, the Mayor of Belgrade announced that Beljarica will finally become officially protected. Two Wild Boars crossed our path, returning from the arable field where they fed overnight, to the safety of Beljarica. Before that, on a rather sharp right bend, 1.8 We continued on to Sakule.

In mid-December, I was birding along the Beljarica levee (Beh-LYAH-ritza), my local patch north of Belgrade, when something other than birds attracted my attention: three wild boars , appearing all black because they had just swam through the swamp to reach the bottom of the levee. I think all were males, at last two huge ones certainly were.

In the morning, still sleepy, we enter the jungle, where a sounder of Indian Boars (a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus ) is watching us, standing among the first trees, right next to the road. Even in protected areas of north-east India, prey densities are very low. One White-eyed Buzzard has turned its back to us.

Were the hydrologists of 1920s worried where the fish will spawn, Wild Boars fatten and eagles nest? And there is only one certain way to protect the lower parts of the city from floods: let the river spread and flood some other area, before it reaches the city. Yet, the Beljarica remained open to flooding.
