I started the campaign for the protection of Beljarica, raising public awareness and collecting more than 10,000 petition signatures, not only because of its Eurasian Otters , White-tailed Eagles , Black Storks , Icterine and Eastern Olivaceous Warblers , etc., but because this large spillway protects the city from flooding.

From that year onward my work became dedicated to the protection of the area, as well as promotion of local ecotourism possibilities. Also, there are more than 44 species of mammals: Otter , Wildcat , Grey Wolf , Beech Martens , Wild Boar , and Golden Jackal. Greater Flamingos stay at the lake in their thousands.

Thanks for the answers and sorry for the ignorance, I live in a country with no big dangerous wildlife except for maybe boars edit: I wanted to focus more on the hunting aspect, not the social one - although sometimes it'd be hard to distinguish between protecting their territory (which might warrant an intimidating sound) vs hunting in those movies/games (..)

In mid-December, I was birding along the Beljarica levee (Beh-LYAH-ritza), my local patch north of Belgrade, when something other than birds attracted my attention: three wild boars , appearing all black because they had just swam through the swamp to reach the bottom of the levee. I think all were males, at last two huge ones certainly were.

A sounder of Indian Boars is watching us from the jungle. They belong to a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus (like four-legged Greco/Roman crested helmets) and are my second race of boar seen in India, while I still remain the only Serbian birder who has never seen one closer to home! Good to know.
