Despite mostly guiding them, I still somehow managed to see a European Badger sitting and watching me back for several seconds, before it slipped into bushes and quite a few White-tailed Eagles , e.g. four in just one morning. And how about Black Storks, otters and eagles? Then, there were Eurasian Otters , which I’ve seen twice.

From that year onward my work became dedicated to the protection of the area, as well as promotion of local ecotourism possibilities. With more than 312 so far recorded bird species, Lake Kerkini National Park offers great birding year-round. Overwintering raptors include Greater Spotted , Golden , and Imperial Eagles.

In mid-December, I was birding along the Beljarica levee (Beh-LYAH-ritza), my local patch north of Belgrade, when something other than birds attracted my attention: three wild boars , appearing all black because they had just swam through the swamp to reach the bottom of the levee. I think all were males, at last two huge ones certainly were.

This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. while herbivores are represented by Chital and Sambar (above) deer, Wild Boar , Nilgai antelope, etc.

A sounder of Indian Boars is watching us from the jungle. They belong to a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus (like four-legged Greco/Roman crested helmets) and are my second race of boar seen in India, while I still remain the only Serbian birder who has never seen one closer to home! One Chital is curiously watching us.
