Birding Southeastern Washington (McNary NWR)

The most popular of the ten eBird hotspots is McNary NWR–Headquarters/Quail Trail , which does indeed feature California Quail , as well as Yellow-Headed Blackbirds and numerous other species. Along the way, Marsh Wrens flitted in the cattails, Caspian Terns noisily passed overhead, and an Osprey hunted over the water.

The Red-winged Blackbirds that were busy staking claims to breeding territory by singing from bushes, trees, and marsh plants were not groggy at all. My 2018 Great Backyard Bird Count

Lema Ranch has several ponds and is always a great spot for waterfowl but I was surprised to find four Snow Geese on secluded pond! Of course, Lema Ranch is one of the locations of my bluebird trails, so I found several Western Bluebirds , including this female intensely hunting ground dwelling insects. Fun birding!

The Kerkini Lake, Greece: Dipped One, Got One

It’s the boar hunting season. The beech forests were dense, landscapes stunning, only that wind… Birds were hiding from it, too, with mostly t**s ( Coal , Long-tailed and Great ), a few thrushes ( Mistle , Song and Eurasian Blackbird ) and numerous Common Chaffinches showing. We started from the village at, perhaps 50 m a.s.l.

Butte Valley Wildlife Area and Meiss Lake

Like many “wildlife areas” it is open to waterfowl hunting during the season. We stopped at the entrance to the wildlife area (see the sign above) where there is a small kiosk with bird lists and hunting regulations as well as maps of the facility.

The skies were full of thousands of Greylag Geese , Pink-footed Geese , Barnacle Geese and Brent Geese on the move and in the shallow water there were already hundreds of Bar-tailed Godwits , Eurasian Oystercatchers , Dunlin and Eurasian Curlew. Thousands of Geese on the move on dusk. Eurasian Curlew.

Little Big Year – Week 35: Route 66, Tucumcari and The Albuquerque area

American Kestrels, Cooper Hawks , and Northern Harriers also found the hunting here to their liking. I counted about 600 of them, along with a few Red-wing Blackbirds and about 50-75 Yellow-headed Blackbirds. A small group of Canada Geese fly over, and out in front of their formation was a pair of Sandhill Cranes.
