From Yellow-hooded Blackbirds to Purple and Common Gallinules , there are almost too many birds to focus on! Last visit we enjoyed superb views of a trio of Masked Cardinals , interrupted by the arrival of a Green Kingfisher that was so intent on hunting, it hardly even cast an eye in our direction.

My family have already grown bored of my presence this week and are asking when I will be going back to work. An angry Red-winged Blackbird attacked again and again, flashing its bright epaulettes and hitting the heron hard in the middle of its back. The blackbird appeared to be purposefully targeting the heron’s back.

It’s not like I had forgotten lists created with friends of ‘songs with birds in the lyrics’, my personal favorites being Sondheim’s Green Finch and Linnet Bird and the Beatles’ Blackbird. It’s relatively easy to classify birds into family groups based on physical characteristics. As they say, the relationship is complicated.

You might think it would have been no big deal to take off to the Adirondacks for a day chasing a rare gull a couple of days before leaving your family for a week while you gallivant around Austria but you probably live alone and will continue to do so. I, on the other hand, enjoy living with my family and would like to keep doing that.

It’s the boar hunting season. The beech forests were dense, landscapes stunning, only that wind… Birds were hiding from it, too, with mostly t**s ( Coal , Long-tailed and Great ), a few thrushes ( Mistle , Song and Eurasian Blackbird ) and numerous Common Chaffinches showing. We started from the village at, perhaps 50 m a.s.l.

Outside of the Cinclus , Ouzel is also a common name sometimes applied to a variety of Turdus thrushes including the Common Blackbird of Europe, so the literal meaning of the name is “Water Thrush&#. But it sounds so much more sophisticated to say Ouzel. These are just a handful of the better-documented vernacular names.
