I was vacationing on Kennebago Lake, where my family has been coming every summer for nearly twenty years. White-throated Sparrow. Not impeded by branches or the need to bushwhack, we could paddle right up close to the sound, in this case the merry singing of a White-throated Sparrow. Kayaking is an amazing way to bird.

Either that or having family friends in Germany. Soon after I was able to tick the ubiquitous House Sparrow in its native haunts where I was allowed to enjoy it. From Purple Herons to Little Grebes to Red Kites , the spot also yielded a small group of Eurasian Spoonbills for the area highlight. I was not lead astray.

As I drove east through scenes of destruction that I can’t even come up with the words to describe, I was frustrated by the continuous flocks of birds going overhead – most were blackbirds but some, at least, were finches. Also, we saw a Blue Grosbeak , some Fox Sparrows , and both species of kinglets.

Family sections start with a brief description of the characteristics shared by the species in the family, followed by a description of the sounds made by those species and how they obtain their song/call knowledge. Or, maybe that is good news too?

These descriptions are quite helpful, especially if you are not familiar with the family group.

In some instances the names old names were given to new birds of familiar types in error ( American Robins are actually thrushes, and New World sparrows are really buntings), but in many other instances these names were applied to entirely new families and genera. Another long time mystery bird, or pair of birds, were the piopio.

In a funny twist of fate, it seems that 2014 will be much the same as 2012 and 2013 have been, with family trips to somewhere in France and business trips to Indonesia and Kazakhstan. The biggest surprise is a small group of 4 Snow Buntings, very unusual for the Mediterranean coast but apparently not unheard of in the Camargue.

In The Warbler Guide , Tom Stephenson and Scott Whittle drew on science to create sonograms, visual depictions of bird song that showed just how a Pine Warbler trill really was different from a Chipping Sparrow trill.
