I love sparrows, so seeing a feather-worn Vesper Sparrow this past July filled my heart with joy. I wanted to see prairie birds and I wanted to experience a new state. We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts.

Sparrows have almost completely taken over for wood-warblers and temperatures are finally waning as is only proper. Eurasian Collared-Doves and Wood Pigeons couldn’t be missed, Eurasian Tree Sparrows were ubiquitous, European Goldfinch and European Greenfinch were easy to spot, White Wagtails walked along wagging their tails, and Northern Wheatears and European Golden Orioles both had fledglings that they were tending. I heard Red-winged Blackbirds conk-a-ree-ing from phragmites. After all, birding under a highway is not exactly my idea of a pleasant experience. It was another nice look but I didn’t linger as I wanted to get home and enjoy the rest of the day with the family. In general, I enjoyed my time out-of-doors.

Either that or having family friends in Germany. Soon after I was able to tick the ubiquitous House Sparrow in its native haunts where I was allowed to enjoy it. Once on our own, Jess and I decided to try a fun experiment. It was much more exciting to me than to my non-birding fiancé and friend. A quick sidetrack.
