It’s an area beloved by photographers for all the Tundra Swans and Bald Eagles that hang out in the area and the surrounding habitat makes for a beautiful backdrop. I was assigned BJ Matzen and he won me over when we nonchalantly leaned over and asked, “You have any interest in seeing a dilute plumage Bald Eagle?”

Some birds breed in flocks, at least in part to avoid predation. Ross Perot once said “Eagles don’t flock, you have to find them one at a time.” Shorebirds, of course, are one of the groups of birds most known and loved for their social tendencies. Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, North Dakota.

A boat ride into this swamp turns up usual suspects like Pied Water Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird , but also (and most excitingly) three species of kingfisher: Green, American Pygmy and Ringed Kingfisher. After a brief period of no activity on the shore, a small group of Willets in fresh plumage cruised in.

I was fortunate to spend time scanning open fields, wetlands, and the inlet separating Hong Kong from China with this large group of friendly and avid avian observers. Imagine me there raring to see more exciting Asian avifauna while the rest of the group screeches to a halt to spend 45 minutes admiring birds I see all the time in New York.

The Five Valleys Audubon Society is one of the most congenial groups of birders I have ever gone on a field trip with. Ferruginous Hawks breed in the grasslands of eastern Montana, but they are rare in the mountains and in winter, so this bird was certainly a surprise. Last week’s trip to the Mission Valley was no exception.

Species Accounts are arranged taxonomically, grouped by family. A special box shows the differences amongst hawk and eagle copulation sounds. The Index lists all sounds displayed in the Species Accounts, grouping similar sounds together. Woodpeckers, appropriately, get a whole page on drumming and tapping.
