Birding at a Historic Sporting Estate

10,000 Birds

I didn’t expect to see any birds. During cold winters, the hunters retreated to the south, intent on quail and other game species. Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Eastern Bluebirds rounded out the species near the pond, but in the distance I noted a Red-tailed Hawk , as well as the regular calls of a Northern Bobwhite.

This diversity makes for a very unique birding experience. One where you get to enjoy the many different local desert birds, right along side the birds that make the warm salt waters they home. Here are a few of the birds we spotted last weekend. This, all bordered by the crystal clear waters of the Sea of Cortez.

How excited we were to see what was for us a new species as we drove up into Olympic National Park on the road to Hurricane Ridge. And even less did we know about the taxonomy of the Black-tailed Deer , which turned out to be not a new species of deer for us at all. A Black-tailed Deer ! Let’s deal with the second issue first.

Week 30: We return to Summer Lake

Imagine waking up to the call of thousands of ducks, geese, and every kind of marsh bird you can imagine. By the time we left, I had recorded one new Lifer, 12 New Year Birds, and a total of 76 species. As I walked along the trails, and water control dikes, I got to enjoy birds just about everywhere. US species – 175.

Birding Zion National Park in Winter

Summer is too hot, the birds are quiet in fall, and winter is too cold. I was very pleased to discover that we had chosen to stay in a place smack dab in the middle of a juniper-pinyon forest, which meant that finding one of my main two target species of the trip, a Juniper Titmouse , was amazingly easy. How gross is that? Nuthatches.

A visit to Dog Lake

Located about 20 miles from Lakeview, Oregon, and sitting at an elevation of 5100 feet, this 208 acre lake is home to many species of fish, including Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. With shore side access limited to the northern end of the lake, that protection allows for a large population of water based birds.
