Solid Air: Invisible Killer Saving Billions of Birds From Windows–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

In 2007 I was working in a university building that was just begging for bird feeders. This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. There were no dead birds for weeks. I hoped it was an anomaly.

Twenty-Four Hours of Awesome Part One: A Burrowing Owl?!?!?!

10,000 Birds

Daisy was working late and my mother-in-law had kindly started to make me some spicy ramen for dinner. Then my phone buzzed with a text message from my good birding buddy Mary and, well, it let me know that a Burrowing Owl had been found in Queens and the photo posted to twitter. 10,000 Birds

I haven’t been birding yet in 2013. Oh, I’ve gotten my first bird of the year ( European Starling – yay?) and a handful more ( Rock Pigeon , House Sparrow , and my first native bird, White-Throated Sparrow ), but for the most part I’ve been sticking to indoor pursuits here in chilly New York City.

Lewis's Woodpecker in New York State

10,000 Birds

Melanerpes lewis is, to put it simply, a really cool bird. Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. In fact, the bird is the fifth recorded in the history of the state,* and the first spotted in the Empire State since 2001. What a bird!
