Fortunately, China still has lots of interesting birding locations left for me. But of course, it is also nice to remember past birding trips. One in November 2018 included a one-day birding trip in the Drakensberg area, a mountain range in the border area between South Africa and Lesotho. That does not make much sense, I know.

Sure, there are no woodpeckers here and very few places you can get a decent donut, and everything is quite a bit more expensive than you think it should be, but I still choose to stay. The storm made the weather more tolerable but seemed to do something to the birds, and I had a fruitless number of minutes finding nothing much of anything.

Somewhere around the Platte River one of the Audubon boys received a black-footed hide from a fur trader. Desperate optimists have tried to wish every extinct species, from the plesiosaur to the Ivory-billed Woodpecker , its own little island of habitat where it survives. Second chances like this are the stuff of legend.

In 1850, the Passenger Pigeon ( Ectopistes migratorius ) was the most abundant bird in North America and possibly the world. That year Congress passed the Lacey Act, followed by the tougher Weeks-McLean Act in 1913 and, five years later, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which protected not just birds but also their eggs, nests, and feathers 1.
