As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. However, it is only a short taxi ride away from the airport where most travelers will arrive at – better to see birds instead of just eating fast food while waiting for a connecting flight.

The Kea – New Zealand’s enigmatic alpine parrot. It is also strange, perhaps, that the subject of this short excellent video series, is not from Australia but from the true ‘land of birds’ across the ditch from Australia – New Zealand or Aotearoa. Certainly, it is worth watching just for the birds.

I always approach the bridge slowly to see what bird species are below and around the area. There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek. This particular tree has been excellent for a variety of bird species including Eastern Spinebills. Pacific Black Ducks. Bennison Creek Bridge. Australian Hobby.

Though I have been birding for a few years now, I had only birded west of the Mississippi once before my recent trip to Austin, Texas. Given how far west I found myself, I was hoping for at least a handful of new birds. As we walked, I noticed two unique birds on the power lines. Monk Parakeet.

It is commonly kept in captivity and has therefore established many feral populations world-wide originating from escaped / released cage birds. A Birdy New Year! Because we never have had.

Even the first explorers to Australia documented there was a risk of extinction of birds and animals into the future and subsequently decided to collect as many specimens as possible!
