It was all too easy to look at that natural cartoon of a bird and leave it as that; some funny looking caricature of a supposed wild bird because really, how could such a strange thing exist? McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park offers close viewing of these birds as well as interpretive signs throughout the park. Over 130 bird species have been observed on the five miles of hiking trails that wind through evergreen and hardwood forests. The Black Swift is considered a Species of Special Concern in California.

Our recent trip to Selva Verde Lodge in Costa Rica was one such trip that held an unexpected surprise. These birds are regarded by many as the Holy Grail of birding in the Neotropics, not necessarily because of their rarity (Sunbitterns are actually fairly widespread) but because of their other unique attributes.

The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.
