Grasshopper Buffet

The southern forests of the island of Trinidad are home to the much-maligned Moruga Grasshopper. Most often encountered near to the village bearing the same name, this abundant grasshopper ultimately sprouts large wings and forms swarms which can decimate crops. But little has been said about its ecological function.

Lesser Antillean Specialties

Originally, I was going to highlight one of the species endemic to the islands of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean; but once I typed in “Lesser Antillean”, six species popped up. Interestingly, this species has been split into two distinct subspecies, one for each of the islands on which it is found.

Flycatchers in the Cocoa

For the purpose of this post being of a reasonable length, I’m only going to touch on members of the Tyrannidae family of New World Flycatchers which can be found in the cocoa estates of Trinidad and Tobago. It bears an uncanny resemblance to the extremely common Great Kiskadee ! Yellow-breasted Flycatcher.

Chacachacare Island

Chacachacare (pronounced shaka-shaka-reh ) is the westernmost of the Bocas islands off the northwestern tip of Trinidad. Accessible by boat only, it takes about half an hour to get there from mainland Trinidad. Trinidad and Tobago has a wide array of different habitats, made possible by a unique rainfall distribution.

Frustratingly Common

It seems almost insulting, sure it allows some insight into the abundance of the particular species in a particular area at a point in time, but all birds are rare and exotic somewhere. Bearing the same designation but actually commonplace is the infrequently encountered Common Pauraque.
