Not long ago, I posted a list of the 25 best National Wildlife Refuges for birding. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has published a list of NWRs that have been created or expanded with Duck Stamp funds. Bear River MBR (Utah): 36.9%. Lee Metcalf NWR (Montana): 96.3%. And the U.S. Aransas NWR (Texas): 42.7%.

One of the admirable things about Montana is how it contains prime examples of not one, but two iconic North American landscapes. I’ve spent a lot of time in, and done a lot of writing about, the Rocky Mountains, their beauty, their climate moods, and the wildlife that lives here.

For example, my list of the Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for birding includes locations in Utah ( Bear River MBR ), Minnesota ( Minnesota Valley NWR ), and Wisconsin ( Horicon NWR ). Naturally, the “missing” states implicitly suggest birding trips, as every “empty” state provides excellent birding opportunities.

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. This was not a very successful prank, especially since we had just encountered a large cinnamon-colored black bear which was much more interesting, even to a birder.
