Grasshopper Buffet

Most often encountered near to the village bearing the same name, this abundant grasshopper ultimately sprouts large wings and forms swarms which can decimate crops. The whole reason I was exploring this area can be traced to a report of multiple sightings of small groups of the migratory Yellow-billed Cuckoo.

Golden Swamp Warbler

Take, for example, this pair of birds I found investigating a cavity in northern Chatham County this weekend. A pair were busy investigating a broken stump, though the real object of their interest, what I assume was an old cavity, happened to just be on the opposite side. Proud cavity-owners! And a lucky birder to watch it happen.

They nest in palms, and we found a small area where we observed several couples investigating and preparing nest holes. The Zapata Swamp, Ciénaga de Zapata , is of course known for the three birds that bear it’s name: the Zapata Rail, the Zapata Wren, and the Zapata Sparrow.
