But in many states, any idiot with 20 bucks can get a permit to own a non-native, captive-bred bird of prey.

I’d been volunteering at rescues through my young adulthood, and I was training as a cat socializer, teaching terrified felines — the unlucky victims of cruel people — to trust humans again.

Such meditative birding is, for me, the heart of the experience. Unlike what you may have read, real rivers bear us ceaselessly into the future. There was plenty of time to try to convince the dogs that the people in the canoe were not in imminent danger and did not need to be rescued. What could be better?

I've written about the much-maligned Muscovy ducks before , and at our old house this time of year I was usually inundated with rescue situations and of course my patio often had images like this. Now I have the drama of the feral cats and of course the greyhounds. There's never a shortage of creatures who need our help.
