I happened to work at that facility, for International Bird Rescue at the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center , part of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network. In an aviary, a recovering bird will spend all of her time perching; so caring for her feet, which are not evolved to a lifetime of bearing weight, is a top priority.

This non-technical book is a development from a series of lectures, tried and tested in numerous adult education courses given to non-specialists. At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Those bears live in the wild and are not used to humans.

In North America, you’ve got Bears at the large end, Cats in the middle, and at the smaller end, the Mustilids. We estimate that free-ranging domestic cats kill 1.4–3.7 ” Many. Probably too many.

It was Los Angeles, after all, where mileage has no bearing on time, but where time was precious for my little rescue on this crystal morning. They pointed out the puncture wounds, likely infected with bacteria that could quickly kill. Her images and words appear in various publications and educational materials.
