Because I've been thinking about the evolution of my own thinking--and languaging--regarding animal rights. Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. Compassion" has been so diluted that most people don't bat an eyelash at the idea of " compassionate carnivores." Or vegan pumpkin pie.

Many gringos make their way to Baja California Sur every year, although the majority are probably heading to Cabo San Lucas to party and test the human limit of tequila endurance. Gray Thrashers are not as conspicuous as the hummingbirds, but should not be difficult to find in the right places.

Juluri's focus on animals used to entertain humans is intentional and speaks to the legal battle he refers to. Free Speech may be a noble ideal, but perhaps we are better served by thinking of it not only as a right but also as a privilege. They certainly depict cruelty to animals, right? Need it be gratuitous to be offensive?

Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans.

One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. Presumably, the species also not only eats fruit but also mammals and possibly birds –the HBW specifically mentions the species catching bats emerging from caves at dusk, and feeding them to juveniles.
