I had been hoping that the Barn Owl I’d seen here a couple of days before would appear, but it was clearly back at its roost. A Siskin by the river Mute Swans , flying over on creaking wings Breakfast at home gave me the chance to tick House Sparrow – the easiest place to find sparrows these days is in my garden.

Wander through my front door and glance upwards and you’ll find at least two watching you, a Tawny Owl and a Barn Owl , both sadly gathered as roadkills. Above our fireplace is a large painting of a Barn Owl. Some larger areas of suitable habitat are holding numbers in double figures.

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge. The bunny got away.

Soccer Player Kicks Owl on Field? By Mike • March 2, 2011 • 3 comments Tweet Share During a soccer game in Colombia, a player kicked an owl that was on the field. The bird, which looked like a Barn Owl , was the mascot for the opposing team and died from its injuries. Video and desultory apology here.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. When I first saw it I thought it might be a snowy or a barn owl because it was almost white.
