So I contacted him for the exact location, which turned out to be a beautiful 14-acre property that belongs to his family, and he kindly invited me over. But neither of us expected a cypress we were walking by to start shaking and release an adult Barn Owl , which then flew away from us as fast as it could. Which it was!

The Barn Owl was a cosmopolitan species, so as it is split the name has to be shared (American, western and eastern). We here at 10,000 Birds have decided to right some wrongs and improve the birding world by renaming birds the way they should have been named from Linnaeus to the present. But the name… oh god the name.

Soccer Player Kicks Owl on Field?

The bird, which looked like a Barn Owl , was the mascot for the opposing team and died from its injuries. Wicked, right? Video and desultory apology here. Hat-tip to Stella.

An afternoon in the Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. The two dogs walk right next to our rover and disappear in the dark. Barn Owl on a dry tree trunk and a… traffic jam! The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of March 2011)

We were at Big John’s pond and a red tailed hawk came out of nowhere and we thought he was going to fly right into the blind. When I first saw it I thought it might be a snowy or a barn owl because it was almost white. Wicked, right? No time to take a picture. It was very a pale gray. Hat-tip to Stella.
