Anyway, so I started checking my bird photo collection for photos of species starting with an A (after all, this is a bird photo blog, though I sometimes tend to forget this). Like the Australian Ringneck (Alice Springs, Australia). A minor variation is a name starting with Australasian, as in Australasian Darter (Brisbane, Australia).

15 Australian Birds (Episode 1)

It has been more than 5 years since I last went to Australia, and I was even less of a qualified bird photographer then than I am now. However, the lockdown forces me to go deeper and deeper into my photo collection, if I want to write anything at all. And that seems to be the only vaguely satisfying thing left to do at the moment.

Satin Bowerbirds and their bowers

All along the eastern coast of Australia there are Satin Bowerbirds Ptilonorhychus violaceus. Instead of collecting green and white items they have an obsession with blue. The Satin Bowerbirds that we have encountered have been close to human habitation and as such the items have been mostly man-made. Male Satin Bowerbird.

Great Bowerbirds bowers

We often see them flying from place to place collecting items for their bowers and they are rather clever at imitating other birds vocal sounds. In a period of a week it had filled up the inside of the bower with a collection of brand new shiny tech screws. The green glass collection.
