Usually, it’s “Bird eating fish” but here we have a case of a “Bird-eating fish.” ” The Wels Catfish, Silurus glanis , is the second largest fish in its range, which covers much of Europe and parts of West Asia. As noted, the fish-like mammals do this as well.

These consist of Red-crowned Crane , Blakiston’s Fish-Owl , and Steller’s Sea-Eagle – all among the most massive and spectacular representatives of their families. Several more hours of driving on icy roads took us to Washi-no-yado, a traditional Japanese B&B near Rausu, the ‘place to be’ for Blakiston’s Fish-Owl.

Anyway, the story is not quite how I remembered it, to be honest, but fitting enough to describe the almost claustrophobic birding experience in ever-shrinking Nanhui. Pat Fish was the creative force behind a band called Jazz Butcher – he died in October last year. Of course, Little Egrets like to eat fish.

Like the Adjutants in Asia and Jabiru of the Americas, the Marabou is our bare-headed scavenging stork. Ethiopia’s Rift Valley lakes such as Lake Ziway and Awassa are famous for the gangs of Marabous that hang around the fish markets and allow close approach in the hope of a smelly handout. They also prey on frogs and crabs.

Here's an article about an increase in animal experiments at Cardiff University in Wales. In four years it experimented on 157,839 mice, 17,324 rats, 11,096 fish, 1,941 birds, 1,253 guinea pigs, 933 pigeons, 884 frogs, 207 cats, 54 rabbits and 18 tree shrews from the tropics of south-east Asia.

One strange thing about Chongming is the inevitable presence of people fishing. Not professionally – these people come in SUVs and probably never recapture their gas money from the fish they catch (though come to think of it, neither do I with my bird photos). of catching extremely small fish.
