One of the less talked about draws of visiting Asia for birders is the opportunity to check out some of the many pheasants that lurk there. Usually pheasants are located deep in the jungle, where they tend to avoid people due to their close resemblance to the highly edible chicken (itself derived from an attractive Asian junglefowl).

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. Ostriches originated in Asia.

It’s my fantasy and it’s yours: Quit the job, say good-bye to the family, and bird. I get my own idea of the lunacy of Gooddie’s quest when I talk to a friend who has birded Asia and Africa. If it were just the birds, I’d grab my bins and be on the next plane to Asia or Africa. It’s what I dream of every Monday morning.

On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: A Partridge in a Pear Tree The partridge, a member of the pheasant family, has been a traditional game bird in England for centuries. This gift is no doubt one of fancy domesticated chickens ( Gallus gallus domesticus ) from France, cooked perhaps in the Parisian style.
