10,000 Birds

Although we have been seeing shorebirds for a while now (and an infuriating Northern Waterthrush near to where we are staying who refuses to have its picture taken), the uptick in uncommonly seen species began in late October with three Bobolinks. So the truth is – I wasn’t really sure if I had seen this species before or not.

Nightingale-Thrushes

10,000 Birds

(Someday I will get up the nerve to write about the ten, yes, TEN Empidonax species I believe I have seen in my little corner of Mexico. Many of these species are common and widespread, making them just that much more challenging. The Ruddy-capped Nightingale Thrush is, in my experience, the hardest of the three species to see.

I and the Bird: What is a Wren?

10,000 Birds

Our friends in the Old World can claim the seminal member of its clan known definitively as Wren. But for those of us in the Americas, the cup runs over with species of Troglodytes. Which is perhaps why the name wren is applied to several unrelated species in the old World. Bicolored Wren , photo by Scott Winton.

Best Bird of the Year 2012

10,000 Birds

This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida. 2012 has certainly been a bumper year for me with an estimated year list of around 3,000 species after extensive travels to South Africa, Ethiopia, South Korea, Indonesia, the Russian Far East, United Kingdom, Peru, Guatemala and Panama.
