I remember the guide on my first Kenyan birding safari remarking that “birding groups always see far more mammals than those who come just to see animals. We also saw a leopard, but it was the A to Z that sticks in the mind. At the time we were looking, without success, for White-backed Woodpeckers.

She’s not really a birder, but having been friends with me she knows that they are there, watches some ( Red-bellied Woodpeckers are her favorite) and will even drink shade-grown coffee because she knows it’s good for migratory birds. Bengals with actual leopard in them are even harder on wild birds.

Lions aside, carnivores are represented by Leopard , Striped Hyena , Jackal , etc., Disinterested Gray Langurs await us in the next tree crown; one Black-rumped Flameback woodpecker is searching the branches, while one gorgeous Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher flies by. Yes, we did – so what? We’re here for the birds!”

It’s a frustrating thing, knowing there are exciting animals out there to be seen and being stuck back at base. Cardinal Woodpecker. Even a Leopard Tortoise dropped by! I wasn’t going to be seeing a Cheetah on my ass back at camp! Fortunately, if I couldn’t go to the bush, the bush could come to me.

For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur. One of them has a scarred shoulder, claw marks, but not big enough for Tiger – probably a Leopard.
