On Saturday morning I was out on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay with Carlos and Anthony enjoying a mid-September search for shorebirds. Of course, injured animals have a very difficult time making it in the wild. From a symbol (to me) of resilience to a falcon’s plaything in a few hours.

Beautiful Bird Portraits from Space Coast

Someday I would like to find one at Jamaica Bay. The key to getting good images of vultures, like this Black Vulture , is to disguise yourself as a dead animal. Anhinga is a bird we don’t ever get to see in New York. Look at that eye! This bird was lounging at the Viera Wetlands.

If I had my druthers I would be birding the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge pretty much every day from July until September. Isn’t Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge a great place to see them? … Trips Jamaica Bay Queens shorebirds' Aren’t shorebirds awesome? Go find some shorebirds!

Updates and Corrections

Animal Person

An update that of course thrills me is that Jamaica has decided to not grant permission for the introduction of greyhound racing (read the l etter from Bruce Golding, Jamaica's Prime Minister--it's only two sentence long, but it does the job). A less-than-thrilling update is that South Africa is still considering dog racing.
