I particularly question the use of chimpanzees in medical research. I recently was escorted through a large primate research laboratory by its director. If they are "only" animals, if they are beasts which abstract not, then my comparison is a piece of sentimental foolishness. These chimps are healthy and well-fed.

I came across these stories about two different medical experiments using mice. Aren't there better things to research? Whether intentionally or not, the title of the article catches the frivolity of the research."Don't So, why put the animals through this if it's not even a reflective experiment. Today's New York Times gives us Adam Shriver's Op-Ed " Not Grass-Fed, But at Least Pain-Free ," which presents its dilemma at the end: If we cannot avoid factory farms altogether, the least we can do is eliminate the unpleasantness of pain in the animals that must live and die on them. It would be far better than doing nothing at all.

I've never discussed that Emily the kitty eats one meal of Ami vegan kibble on most days (and one of canned, animal-based food). He fares best (as evidenced by poop, energy, licking, scratching, and severity of limping) on food with no grains whatsoever and very high animal protein--almost carnivore level. She is doing fine with that.

Europe and Canada outlawed using hormones on dairy cows because of such human and animal health concerns. There is as yet no medical research showing the cost of several extra years of hormones flooding the system. In cows, the hormones have been shown to increase lameness, udder infections and bone cancer.

In my earlier post "Children and Heart Disease" available here , I noted that, in the seventh and final edition of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care: A Handbook for Parents of the Developing Child from Birth to Adolescence , Dr. Benjamin Spock no longer recommends feeding animal products to children after two years of age. The answer is "Yes."
