We hadn’t been on the road long before a shout went out that a dog had been seen, and we quickly turned back, and there was my first Painted Wolf in Mkuze.

For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur. One of them has a scarred shoulder, claw marks, but not big enough for Tiger – probably a Leopard.

It’s such an inspiring show, with people who are doing amazing work on behalf of homeless animals. DogTown is the name of an area of Best Friends Animal Society in Angel Canyon, Utah. Shy dogs are often among the first to be euthanized in shelters because they are difficult to adopt, but not at DogTown, a no-kill facility.

These vast and rugged lands of savanna, hills, gorges and rivers still protect some of Ethiopia’s largest extant herds of typical African savanna game, including African Elephant, African Buffalo, Giraffe, Lion, Leopard, African Wild Dog and numerous species of grazers. We spotted a young Leopard and his mother in Mago National Park.

They range in size from the tiny Fairy Penguin ( Eudyptula minor ) at about 1 kg to the very large Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes forsteri at about 35 kg (that would be a reasonably large dog). They are excellent underwater swimmers, can capture prey with their well-adapted beaks, and can hold their breath for very long periods of time.
