I would love to spend a night at this lake to experience the magic of twilight here – but there are many other animals which frequent this area that can materialize at any moment. In fact, a herd of Cape Buffalo spotted us on the shore here and began gradually moving closer.

Saving the Drowning Cormorant, or the Kerkini Lake, Greece

Asian water buffaloes were brought to Greece by Ottoman Turks centuries ago and by now, they have developed into a separate race, the Greek buffalo, which is protected as an old domestic breed. Out of some 4000 buffaloes still being kept in Greece, about 3000 are at this lake. Then, there was a herd of buffaloes.

It has all Big Five animals and a whole lot of other grumpy mammals. Before leaving the safety of the car I heeded the park’s advice and checked for animal tracks belonging to any biting, gnawing, mauling, trampling, stabbing or disembowelling species. Looking left I saw a big, male buffalo behind the bush.

Africa’s Big Five and Little Five

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

Interestingly enough, a similar situation with the same animal would unfold many years later – with a crushingly similar outcome for me. The following year, 2014, I elected to join a different group birding the lowland seasonal forest at the opposite end of the CBC radius from where I had that wonderful experience the year before.

Called Mark Twain's Book of Animals , the book contains a number of his writing about animals. Interesting. The book also contains writings by Twain against vivisection.
