Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. And to prove it, there’s The Queen. When she didn’t fly off, he stopped his car and approached her.

They took dogs to Australia, chickens across the Pacific, rabbits to England, horses to the New World, and then brought potatoes back. California Quail are familiar birds to West Coast birders of North America, and Kiwis too now. Rabbits are still an agricultural pest. In many ways, that is exactly what happened.

Another three species migrate down Mexico’s Gulf coast to Central America, to join the two resident species of Central America and southeastern Mexico. All right, I’ll admit that I do have a bit of fondness for our resident empid species. I have seen them all… or at least, I think I have.
