Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). They packed up in June of 2013 and headed south from San Diego with the southern tip of South America as their destination. It is believed that the population in El Triunfo, Chiapas is stable, but throughout its range the population is still declining and the Horned Guan is an endangered species.

I went on to tell him that I’d seen these birds in Central America but that I needed to see them in the US too. These wily and diminutive owls occur from Bolivia and Argentina northward through Central America (check out this post on Pico Bonito ) and only just occur in the United States in Arizona and south Texas.
