I’d been familiar with the occasional post-breeding wanderings of great birds like Wood Stork s and Roseate Spoonbill s into the southern part of my own state, but to be in an area where both are practically guaranteed and to not be assaulted by Shamu and Donald Duck to see them? Who knew?).

Alligators may have drawn the loudest cheers on the boat – especially from the two elementary school boys on the bench behind me – but we remained drawn to the small Pied-billed Grebes and Common Gallinules. I see grebes and gallinules all the time, but one can never tire when watching successful breeding birds.

I should have known that birding High Island meant I would be 20 minutes away from a place where hundreds of thousands of shorebirds and waterbirds rest, feed, breed, and generally have a good time. I love American Avocets and I rarely see them in such marvelous breeding plumage, so I was in heaven. Clapper Rail. Back to the Flats.

Nearly every species of heron and egret in North America forage only feet away, some of them in their dazzling breeding displays. An alligator makes an aggressive but half-hearted lunge for a group of dabbling Blue-winged and Green-winged Teals. A lone Merlin watches the proceedings as a Sora darts by underneath our feet.
