In the case of these Tricolored Blackbirds , they are formed for DEFENSE. This is my flock of Laysan Albatross , on Midway Atoll. These Willets , Marbled Godwits and Long-billed Dowitchers are coming in to roost at Redwood Shores, CA. Flocks are formed for many reasons. Abbott’s Lagoon, Point Reyes National Seashore, CA.

Yellow-billed Magpies are found just inland, and Tricolored Blackbirds can be found on Point Reyes (a legendary migrant trap) by the thousand in the fall. Hawaiian Petrel has become an annual visitor in recent years, and albatross are more abundant in this part of the state. We have a little bit of everything here.

but I really feel I should nominate an albatross, if only because I love taunting Corey about them. I’ll go for the Black-browed Albatross , in celebration of the fact that conservation efforts have resulted in this species being downgraded from endangered to near threatened this year. He wrote about it in more detail here.

I do have to admit; I did get this nice image of the Blackbird , which despite being quite common, I have not captured with my camera yet. The highlight here was a pair of Skylarks, along with Redpolls, Yellowhammers, Dunnocks, Masked Lapwings, and a pair of Marsh Harriers.

Aside from geese, various albatross, alcids, eagles, owls, cranes, swans and condors have life partners as well. Despite how familiar you may be with sights and sounds of Red-winged Blackbirds , you may not know what is going on down in the reeds. Lastly, I’ll leave you with Laysan Albatross.
