Choosing to adopt a dog rather than get one at the pet store (or what some like to refer to as “puppy mill”) is a beautiful thing—essentially you are saving a poor pup from euthanasia and you’re providing a an animal with a good home. But adopting a pet is a huge responsibility and is very similar to adopting a child.

A puppy at a shelter in Oklahoma survived being euthanized (sadly, the same can’t be said for the little pups siblings). So when we adopted a human baby we knew we'd have to teach that human to avoid Violet. We weren't planning to adopt another. The child and the cat still have a special relationship. When we adopted them we made a commitment to care for them for the rest of their lives. Violet's a member of our family. And she does.
