In later years it included a class for digiscoping which I entered a few times. I was placed one year with a photograph of little egrets, taken at Kerkini in Greece, while the following year I won the class with a shot of Wryneck, photographed in an orchard in Poland ( above ).

The coves are populated with oak, hemlock, poplar, and the area is stream-rich (including a Class V river gorge) with lush understories and shrubs. These owls don’t live in a state park or any sort of protected area, they live in the neighborhoods, right next door to stucco middle-class Florida homes, going about their business in a landscape of manicured lawns and screened-in porches.

I just chalked this up to my friends being weird, until I took the Master Naturalist Class at the Montana Natural History this fall. The Master Naturalist class gave me a first look at this. Way, way back, during our inuagural game of Gone Birding , my friend Molly developed a theory of birds. Knowing what a sparrow is is kind of easy.

After looking through every bar, we concluded that all had abandoned the ship without warning us. On a typical cruise, folks sleep in, have a lazy breakfast, sit by the pool with a cocktail, and watch the world-class entertainment. Little did we know, they went to bed early to rise early.
