Loner, Drifter: More on the Hoary Bat

I never knew, until my ill-fated encounter , that these are among the most birdie of the North American flying mammals. They may gather in flocks of hundreds during their fall journey, abandoning their lonely summer habits. I cannot get the Hoary Bat out of my head. Hoary Bats roost in trees, not caves.

This is a cruise like no other, full of scientific lectures, over forty guides spread out on deck, bird-themed parties, and a lights-off mandate to protect birds at night. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013. After looking through every bar, we concluded that all had abandoned the ship without warning us.

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. Presumably, the species also not only eats fruit but also mammals and possibly birds –the HBW specifically mentions the species catching bats emerging from caves at dusk, and feeding them to juveniles.
