Tragically, I never saw any birds near the nest later on – I guess they abandoned it, decided to quit procreating, or just got eaten by some other bird or cat. The juvenile Chinese Blackbirds get older but still look kind of stupid. The male at work.

However, there are those species which have a hard time bringing attention to themselves such as Yellow-shouldered Blackbird , Giant Nuthatch , and Vinaceous-breasted Parrot. Regardless of their popularity, these species and the threatened ecosystems they inhabit are equally spectacular.

So, winter is very nearly upon us, and no, I never did find a Yellow-headed Blackbird. The Gray-crowned Rosy Finch , when she abandons her breeding grounds, prefers to forage on the ground, similar to (and sometimes in company with) Snow Buntings, Horned Larks , and Longspurs.

A Common Grackle appeared to be more reluctant to take the plunge into the shallow water, but once it did, it thrashed about with abandon. Red-shouldered Blackbirds seemed to have no qualms about leaping straight in and getting thoroughly soaked. With his feathers sodden, he looked vulnerable on the ground.

Most of them were pretty good in the Owl-Duck-Pigeon range, but they got bogged down when trying to make the leap from a study skin to a particular page of the field guide for, say, a blackbird or a sparrow. And that frustration was epic. Knowing what a sparrow is is kind of easy.

The birds were right next to an old abandoned farm house, and seemed quite happy to have their photo taken, up to a point, but then like the wind, they were gone, out thru the flat desert areas of New Mexico! I counted about 600 of them, along with a few Red-wing Blackbirds and about 50-75 Yellow-headed Blackbirds.
